Dr. Edward Buchel MD, BSc., FACS
Dr. Buchel is currently the Provincial Surgery Specialty Lead for Shared Health Manitoba and Professor and Head, Department of Surgery, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, Max Rady College of Medicine, University of Manitoba. He is also the Surgery Site Director for the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre.
Dr. Buchel completed his medical training at the University of Manitoba and his Residency in General Surgery at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center in Manhattan New York. Dr. Buchel then went on to complete a Fellowship in Plastic Surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota. Further training in reconstructive microsurgery was completed in Taipei, Taiwan. In 2001, Dr. Buchel joined the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona and was the Program Director of the Microsurgery Fellowship until returning to Winnipeg in 2004.
On returning to Winnipeg Dr. Buchel joined the Department of Surgery as Associate Professor and Section Head of Plastic Surgery. Until 2009, he was the Program Director of the Plastic Surgery Residency. In 2006, Dr. Buchel developed and became the Director of Microvascular and Reconstruction Fellowship at the University of Manitoba. From 2011-2021 he was the Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Plastic Surgery (now called PLASTIC SURGERY). Dr. Buchel is currently focusing his clinical practice on reconstructive microsurgery for cancer and trauma patients, as well as general reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery.
He has been involved in developing the Breast Reconstruction Team since its inception in 2004.
